2010 Hanna

This wine's exotic tropical fruit and litchi flavors are plumped up by aging on the lees. It's warm and peppery, with a green, agave-like character and graphite-edged acidity in the finish. A complex, full and pithy wine to serve with roast pork.

2010 Hall

Another in a string of great Sauvignon Blancs from Hall. The wine is richly textured in citrus, green apple and peach flavors, with a zingy hint of gooseberry. Acidity is crisp, and the finish is curiously dry and sweet in honey at the same time.

2010 Chateau Ste. Michelle

The 2010 Chatea Ste. Michelle Sauvignon Blanc Horse Heaven Vineyard was 30% barrel-fermented. Fresh herbs, cut grass, citrus, and a hint of gooseberry inform the nose of a crisp, refreshing, impeccably balanced Sauvignon that is an outstanding value meant for drinking over the next 2-3 years.

2011 Saint Clair

A fresh, fragrant take on Marlborough sauvignon, this blends fruit from Rapaura, Lower Wairau and the Brancott Valley. It is long on passionfruit and tangy orange citrus flavor, firm and full in texture. Match its juicy richness with a shellfish stew.

2010 Long Meadow Ranch

There’s no oak on this wine, which lets the fruit star. It does a bravura performance, with turns of pineapples, limes, gooseberries and tart mandarin oranges that finish in a swirl of spices. Acidity adds a brilliant zestiness, and even though the alcohol is only 12.9% by volume, the wine is thoroughly dry.

2009 o fournier sauvignon blanc alfa centauri leyda valley chile white wine 750ml thumb

2009 O. Fournier

The 2009 O. Fournier Alfa Centauri Sauvignon Blanc is pale, greenish straw in color. Musky citrus pith and herbal aromas, with suave floral and spice qualities gaining strength with air. Pliant orange and pear flavors are complicated by dusty minerals and honeysuckle. The orange note lingers on the broad, persistent finish, which also shows exotic licorice and floral elements.

2009 S.C. Pannell

47% sauvignon blanc, 41% pinot gris and 12% riesling. Very pale greenish-gold color. High-pitched aromas of lime zest, candied lemon, talc and white pepper. Racy and dry on entry, then fleshier in the middle, with succulent orchard fruit flavors emerging with air. Finishes on a bitter citrus zest note, with impressive, sneaky persistence. I like this wine's vivacity and uncompromising quality.

2010 Cliff Lede

No lean, spartan effort this, it is deep in dried hay varietal notes and equally well-endowed with melony and slightly peachy fruit scents buttressed by a touch of a toasty element. The wine is full on the palate and supple with a mouthfilling richness that, while speaking to weight, never carries the wine into excess. We would be far more likely to partner this solid effort with salmon baked in parchment than we would tangy shellfish.

2010 Walter Hansel

The 2010 Walter Hansel Sauvignon Blanc is light, bright, and yellow.  Fresh melon and tangerine aromas are brightened by lemon zest and honeysuckle.  Light-bodied but fleshy honeydew and citrus flavors are nicely concentrated and incisive.  Shows very little in the way of herbal character; in fact, this is seriously fruit-driven for the variety.  A suave, very attractive rendition of sauvignon blanc that finishes sappy and clinging, with refreshing bitterness and very good length.

2010 Duckhorn

An interesting and complex wine, dry and crisp, and unique among California Sauvignon Blancs. Although there’s plenty of citrus fruit, it’s marked by other things, such as minerals and herbs, and the sweet, olivaceous taste that the variety’s Sauvignon nature contributes in a cool vintage.

2009 Robert Mondavi

Bright, pale yellow-green.  Lively, perfumed aromas of ripe grapefruit, flowers and spearmint.  Saline and dry in the mouth, with sexy high tones to the grapefruit and wild herb flavors.  Dense, savory and aromatic, this bracing sauvignon really stains the palate.  Aged entirely in oak, 24% new, but I never would have guessed it.

2009 Bedrock Wine Co

The 2009 Bedrock Cuvee Caritas Proprietary White is a blend dominated by Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Interestingly, the Semillon comes from the famed Monte Rosso Vineyard and is put through malolactic fermentation. The Sauvignon Blanc had its malo blocked. It offers up wonderful honeyed melon, orange rind, tropical fruit and lanolin notes. The oak is hiding in the background, and the wine possesses good acidity, beautiful purity and zesty acids that provide a laser-like precision. Drink this beauty over the next few years although I suspect it may last a decade or more.

2009-lail-sauvignon-blanc-georgia-napa-valley-california-white-wine-750ml-thumb.jpg

2009 Lail

The 2009 Lail Sauvignon Blanc Georgia, which comes from a Yountville vineyard, reveals a perfume of honeyed melons, subtle smoke and a distinctive minerality. Medium-bodied and intense with abundant texture and concentration, the oak aging is present in the background, but the wine has the texture and power of a Chardonnay with its Sauvignon flavors well-displayed. Both of these wines could last for a decade although I suspect they are best drunk during their first 2-3 years of life. This is a beauty.
