Bright straw-green. Floral, high-pitched aromas of stone fruits and fresh herbs on the clean, enticing nose. Shows very good balance and energy to its flavors of lemon icing, green apple, pear and herbs. Richer on the palate than I expected, with lovely concentration and length; this is a very serious entry-level Soave and one of the best versions from Inama in years. Very well done.

There's a tautness to this focused, racy white from the crackling acidity, which works nicely with the subtle white peach, star fruit, green apple, licorice and ground spice notes. For fans of the traditional style—very dry and minerally. Drink now through 2020.

Lemon, orange, lentil, gooseberry and waxed bean mark Angerer’s 2010 Gruner Veltliner Kies, whose levity, brightness, and zest are characteristic of virtues that emerge from Gruner Veltliner in this unusual vintage. In this instance, success was achieved by taking some lots through malo. A subtly silken texture; emerging aura of lilac; and exuberantly juicy finish add to the infectious charm of a wine I would plan on enjoying over the next year or two.

The 2009 Pinot Gris Estate displays aromas of baking spices, melon, and tangerine zest. On the palate there is a trace of residual sugar balanced with lively acidity, a creamy texture, good volume, and a lengthy, fruit-filled finish. Drink this pleasant effort over the next 1-2 years. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, continuity and consistency are the keys to Cristom’s success.

Bright, pale lemon-yellow. Pure, perfumed aromas and flavors of peach, fresh apricot, mint and flowers. Sweet, rich and tactile, with complex fruit, floral and honey flavors energized by citrus zest acidity. It's hard to scrape this unflagging wine off the palate, not that you'd want to. The best examples of northwest Italy's frothy, sweet, low-alcohol sparkling wine can be habit-forming: I dare you to stop with just one glass.

Generous and very pretty in its scent of lemon blossom and minerals, this wine's mild leesy note emerges with air. The leaner flavors of key lime and lemon create tension with broader, richer apple notes, while the wine's mineral underpinning keeps everything on point. A crisp foil to smoked salmon canapes.

A streak of minerality runs through this 2009 Paul Blanck Pinot Gris, setting up flavors of cantaloupe, smoke, star fruit, lemon curd and wax, with a tangy finish. A finely layered wine in a light-bodied, fresh and accessible package. Drink now through 2020.

47% sauvignon blanc, 41% pinot gris and 12% riesling. Very pale greenish-gold color. High-pitched aromas of lime zest, candied lemon, talc and white pepper. Racy and dry on entry, then fleshier in the middle, with succulent orchard fruit flavors emerging with air. Finishes on a bitter citrus zest note, with impressive, sneaky persistence. I like this wine's vivacity and uncompromising quality.

The 2009 Dr. Pauly Bergweiler Kabinett Bernkastler Badstube is a very fragrant, evoking lilac, freesia and rose aromas, this elegant white remains floral in flavor, accented by lime and green apple. Not as generous as some 2009s, yet appealing. Drink now through 2020.

The nose on this 2009 Dr. Pauly Bergweiler Riesling Spatlese Wehlener Sonnenuhr is a mixture of brown spices, golden apple and citrus aromas in this white, which is ripe and sweet, yet vibrant and focused, with a racy structure carrying pâte de fruit, Golden Delicious apple and apricot flavors. This has intensity and length, but needs time to integrate and shed its baby fat. Best from 2014 through 2030.

The 2008 Joh. Jos. Prum Riesling Kabinett has a hint of reduction and some carbonic gas make this white awkward now, but it's light and focused, with delicate floral, peach and lime flavors, all backed by slate. Mouthwatering finish. Best from 2012 through 2022.

The 2009 Bedrock Cuvee Caritas Proprietary White is a blend dominated by Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Interestingly, the Semillon comes from the famed Monte Rosso Vineyard and is put through malolactic fermentation. The Sauvignon Blanc had its malo blocked. It offers up wonderful honeyed melon, orange rind, tropical fruit and lanolin notes. The oak is hiding in the background, and the wine possesses good acidity, beautiful purity and zesty acids that provide a laser-like precision. Drink this beauty over the next few years although I suspect it may last a decade or more.

The 2008 Joh. Jos. Prum Riesling Kabinett Graacher Himmelreich smells of green tea, fresh apple, honeysuckle, and acacia; offers boundless refreshment and gravity-defying buoyancy with pungent invigoration of citrus peel and apple skin; and finishes with its pure fruit and effusive, persistent inner-mouth floral perfume allied to saline, stony, smoke, iodine-like and remarkably savory manifestations of things mineral. It will reward 20-25 years of cellaring for the few who put that claim to the test – or who are already convinced by their past experience with Prum Rieslings.

Vivid and pure-tasting, with a well-structured array of mineral, peach, citrus and savory spice notes that are tightly wound. Still, this is quite airy, especially on the impeccable finish of lime and nectarine.

This 2008 Sine Qua Non Jinete Bajo is a pure nectar of honeyed marmalade, waxy, syrupy honeysuckle, exotic creme brulee, and citrus. The remarkable acidity cuts through the extraordinary sweetness, so the impression is fresh and vibrant.

The exuberant 2007 Hermitage Blanc reveals notes of petroleum, crushed rocks, earth, white currants and peaches, an unctuous texture, high glycerin and good acidity. This big, thick white Hermitage will not be as long lived as the 2009, but for drinking over the next two decades, it is impossible to resist. Jean-Louis and Gerard Chave opened a bottle of the 2003 Hermitage Blanc to give me an idea of how this vintage is aging. This monumental offering, which flirts with perfection, has virtually no acidity and is aging beautifully. The Chaves believe it is a repeat of what Gerard’s father made in 1929.
