2009 Firestone

This opens round and toasty, presenting green fig and sweet pineapple flavors that run through a rainwater-fresh finish. It closes on the stony savor of a pebble in the mouth, the fruit ending tart and firm. A wine to buy by the case and serve with grilled head-on shrimp, langoustines or other fruits de mer. This is the first vintage made by Paul Warston, who had been at Trefethen before coming to Firestone in 2009.

2010 Foxglove

The 2010 Foxglove Chardonnay is one of the top values in California wine. It possesses tons of ripe, varietal fruit in a style that is quite rich but not heavy. Clean citrus and floral notes add freshness on the long finish. Lees stirring gives the wine much of its richness, while aging in steel helps maintain freshness. There is remarkable depth and textural finesse here, never mind a price that is mind-boggling for this level of quality. I was blown away by the two wines I tasted from Foxglove, Bob and Jim Varner’s negociant label. The Varners clearly have the magic touch. These are among the finest values readers will find anywhere in the world.

2009 Chateau Ste. Michelle

The 2009 Chateau Ste. Michelle Chardonnay Cold Creek Vineyard was fermented and aged sur lie in 53% new French oak for 9 months. Aromas of pain grille, pencil lead, poached pear, spiced apple and tropical notes lead to a wine in need of another 1-2 years to fully blossom. Still tightly wound but with plenty of material, it will merit its outstanding rating with more bottle age.

Oak brings strong buttered toast and vanilla flavors to this Chardonnay. But it’s also a powerhouse from the vineyard, with massive orange, pineapple and apricot flavors. May even have some botrytis, to judge from the honeyed sweetness. Yet for all the opulence, the finish is dry.

2009 Ramey

Bright gold.  Wilder and more pungent than the Sonoma Coast bottling, displaying scents of poached pear, porcini and white truffle, along with floral and spice nuances that pick up power with air.  Deeply concentrated orchard and pit fruit flavors are energized by tangy acidity.  A smoky note comes up on the finish and lingers tenaciously.  This comes across like a California version of a premier cru from Chassagne-Montrachet.

A selection of the finest barrels, the 2009 Chardonnay Cuvee Alyce (named for Stephen Hansel’s mother) is fashioned from both the old Wente clone and the newer Dijon Clone 95. This Chardonnay possesses all the same characteristics as are found in The North Slope, but more structure, restraint and possibly more aging potential. This intense 2009 reveals that overwhelming elegance that is a hallmark of this vintage. The most backward of these estate Chardonnays, it should last for a decade.

If arguably the most flamboyant of the new DuMOL bunch, the "Isobel" bottling is also the deepest and most involving as well. It sports a fascinating mix of ripe apples, honey and bakery shop sweetness in the nose and follows with dramatic, deeply drawn flavors that go on and on. It, too, is a big wine, and it will want to be the star of the show, so plan to pour it with appropriately rich foods ... ideally after having been set aside for a few further years of development.

The 2010 Chardonnay La Carriere is a beautifully taut, focused wine laced with lemon, spices and mint. It possesses excellent energy and cut through to the finish. The Carriere shows plenty of focus, but it also has an element of heaviness that is typical of the Chardonnays here in 2010. It will be interesting to see how the wine develops over the coming year. This is Peter Michael's steepest vineyard.
