The 2010 Clos Henri Petit Clos Sauvignon Blanc gives pronounced aromas of pink grapefruit, passion fruit and gooseberries with a hint of fresh sage. Medium bodied, it offers very good tropical fruit concentration in the mouth with lively acidity, a suggestion of texture and a long finish. Drink it now through 2013.

The 2010 Nora (100% Albarino) saw 10% of the wine fermented and aged sur lie in French oak. It displays a similar aromatic and flavor profile as the Peitan but with a creamier texture, and greater depth, concentration, and length. It is an outstanding value for drinking over the next 3 years.

The 2010 Spy Valley Riesling gives pronounced notes of lime zest, kumquats, lemon juice and fresh grapefruit with nuances of coriander seed and frangipani. Light bodied and refreshingly crisp in the mouth, it has a medium-dry level of sweetness and very good concentration of citrus flavors, finishing long and a little chalky. Delicious now, it should evolve gracefully and drink to 2016+.

The 2010 Foxglove Chardonnay is one of the top values in California wine. It possesses tons of ripe, varietal fruit in a style that is quite rich but not heavy. Clean citrus and floral notes add freshness on the long finish. Lees stirring gives the wine much of its richness, while aging in steel helps maintain freshness. There is remarkable depth and textural finesse here, never mind a price that is mind-boggling for this level of quality. I was blown away by the two wines I tasted from Foxglove, Bob and Jim Varner’s negociant label. The Varners clearly have the magic touch. These are among the finest values readers will find anywhere in the world.

Light gold. Fresh lime and orange zest aromas are lifted by talc and mint notes. Taut citrus and green apple flavors pick up a gingery nuance with air and show an intense mineral character. Textbook nervy, focused verdejo, finishing with very good precision and spicy persistence.

A superb, essentially dry Vouvray that sells for a song, the 2010 Domaine des Aubuisieres Cuvee Silex exhibits wonderfully flowery, melony aromas in its fragrant aromatics along with medium-bodied, crisp, pure flavors and an attractive flinty character. There is some residual sugar, but good acidity largely masks that component.

The 2010 Vina Cobos Felino Chardonnay was native yeast fermented with the wine going through full malolactic fermentation. Bright straw-green. Floral, high-pitched aromas of stone fruits and fresh herbs on the clean, enticing nose. Shows very good balance and energy to its flavors of lemon icing, green apple, pear and herbs. Richer on the palate than I expected, with lovely concentration and length; this is a very serious entry-level Soave and one of the best versions from Inama in years. Very well done.

There's a tautness to this focused, racy white from the crackling acidity, which works nicely with the subtle white peach, star fruit, green apple, licorice and ground spice notes. For fans of the traditional style—very dry and minerally. Drink now through 2020.

The 2009 Lincourt Courtney's is a fine Chardonnay, creamy, flavorful and complex. It’s as soft as buttercream, yet a vital streak of acidity brightens the tropical fruit and vanilla richness. Showcases the Santa Rita Hills in a good, cool vintage.

The 2009 Pinot Gris Estate displays aromas of baking spices, melon, and tangerine zest. On the palate there is a trace of residual sugar balanced with lively acidity, a creamy texture, good volume, and a lengthy, fruit-filled finish. Drink this pleasant effort over the next 1-2 years. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, continuity and consistency are the keys to Cristom’s success.

There’s no oak on this wine, which lets the fruit star. It does a bravura performance, with turns of pineapples, limes, gooseberries and tart mandarin oranges that finish in a swirl of spices. Acidity adds a brilliant zestiness, and even though the alcohol is only 12.9% by volume, the wine is thoroughly dry.

Generous and very pretty in its scent of lemon blossom and minerals, this wine's mild leesy note emerges with air. The leaner flavors of key lime and lemon create tension with broader, richer apple notes, while the wine's mineral underpinning keeps everything on point. A crisp foil to smoked salmon canapes.

Bright, pale lemon-yellow. Pure, perfumed aromas and flavors of peach, fresh apricot, mint and flowers. Sweet, rich and tactile, with complex fruit, floral and honey flavors energized by citrus zest acidity. It's hard to scrape this unflagging wine off the palate, not that you'd want to. The best examples of northwest Italy's frothy, sweet, low-alcohol sparkling wine can be habit-forming: I dare you to stop with just one glass.

Lemon, orange, lentil, gooseberry and waxed bean mark Angerer’s 2010 Gruner Veltliner Kies, whose levity, brightness, and zest are characteristic of virtues that emerge from Gruner Veltliner in this unusual vintage. In this instance, success was achieved by taking some lots through malo. A subtly silken texture; emerging aura of lilac; and exuberantly juicy finish add to the infectious charm of a wine I would plan on enjoying over the next year or two.

The 2009 O. Fournier Alfa Centauri Sauvignon Blanc is pale, greenish straw in color. Musky citrus pith and herbal aromas, with suave floral and spice qualities gaining strength with air. 47% sauvignon blanc, 41% pinot gris and 12% riesling. Very pale greenish-gold color. High-pitched aromas of lime zest, candied lemon, talc and white pepper. Racy and dry on entry, then fleshier in the middle, with succulent orchard fruit flavors emerging with air. Finishes on a bitter citrus zest note, with impressive, sneaky persistence. I like this wine's vivacity and uncompromising quality.

The 2010 Walter Hansel Sauvignon Blanc is light, bright, and yellow. Fresh melon and tangerine aromas are brightened by lemon zest and honeysuckle. Light-bodied but fleshy honeydew and citrus flavors are nicely concentrated and incisive. Shows very little in the way of herbal character; in fact, this is seriously fruit-driven for the variety. A suave, very attractive rendition of sauvignon blanc that finishes sappy and clinging, with refreshing bitterness and very good length.

No lean, spartan effort this, it is deep in dried hay varietal notes and equally well-endowed with melony and slightly peachy fruit scents buttressed by a touch of a toasty element. The wine is full on the palate and supple with a mouthfilling richness that, while speaking to weight, never carries the wine into excess. We would be far more likely to partner this solid effort with salmon baked in parchment than we would tangy shellfish.

The 2009 Chateau Ste. Michelle Chardonnay Cold Creek Vineyard was fermented and aged sur lie in 53% new French oak for 9 months. Aromas of pain grille, pencil lead, poached pear, spiced apple and tropical notes lead to a wine in need of another 1-2 years to fully blossom. Still tightly wound but with plenty of material, it will merit its outstanding rating with more bottle age.
