"Bursts from the glass with massive dark fruit and a rich, powerful personality. Provencal herbs, mint and tobacco develop later, adding considerable complexity and nuance. Still, this remains a massive, virile wine endowed with tons of structure and heft, some of which comes from the use of Petit Verdot, which is not commonly found in Paso. The blend is 62% Syrah, 14% Mourvedre, 12% Grenache and 12% Petite Sirah."

"A dark, gutsy style, with lots of briary grip supporting the black olive, singed bay leaf, mulled black currant and macerated blackberry fruit. Terrific aromatics are slowly emerging, and the sweet tapenade-filled finish is long and mouthwatering. Built for the cellar. Best from 2013 through 2027."

"An absolutely profound offering, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige requires 5-6 years of cellaring given its massive concentration and tannic structure. The wine was relatively closed the day I tasted it, but it did display an inky/purple color along with hints of camphor, graphite, creme de cassis, kirsch, licorice and espresso beans. Full-bodied and moderately tannic with gorgeous freshness, glycerin and a skyscraper-like texture."

"Deep, dense and rich, this oozes with character and sheer personality. Black fruit, tobacco, incense and crushed rocks are some of the many nuances that unfold as the wine sits in the glass. Tar, asphalt and licorice are layered into the sinewy, powerful finish. This is a fascinating and totally intriguing Cabernet."

"There were no problems with the opaque ruby/purple-tinged 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape, which had just been bottled. This exotic red boasts notes of black truffles, roasted meats, charcuterie, incense, blackberries and black cherry liqueur intermixed with hints of roasted herbs and licorice. Full-bodied, dense and as concentrated as the estate’s extraordinary 2007."

"This is drop-dead gorgeous. Rose petals, flowers, spices and mint are some of the many, many nuances that unfold as this gracious Barolo opens up in the glass. This is at once light on its feet yet rich, deep and resonant, expressing the myriad contradictions that are at the heart of what makes Barolo one of the world’s truly icon wines. Today the tannins are a little firm, of course, but there is an inner sweetness to the 2008 that is compelling. This is a fabulous showing from the Vajra family."

"This is a serious, serious wine endowed with superb depth and textural richness. Today the tannins are a bit firm, and the wine is, of course, very young, but there is no denying the sheer finesse and pedigree of what is in the glass. Juicy dark cherries, plums, graphite, mint and sweet herbs flesh out beautifully as the 2008 continues to open up. This is a dazzling effort from the De Marchis and Proprieta Sperino. I can’t wait to see how the 2008 ages."

"This is a delicious wine, even if it is a touch light in body for an Amarone. Dark cherries, plums, flowers and sweet spices take shape in the glass. This shows lovely inner perfume and radiance, not to mention considerable harmony. The understated style seems best suited to near and mid-term drinking. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017."

"A cool climate has given this wine bracing acidity and gentle-yet-persistent tannins. Its flavors of wild raspberries and cherries, with spice and mineral overtones, are delicious. The oak is powerful and present in the form of toast and sweet vanilla, but perfectly balanced with the wine’s volume."

"Doing a fine impersonation of a classified growth Pauillac, it offers up a nose of sandalwood, Asian spices, incense, herbal notes, violets, black currants, and blackberry. This sets the stage for an already complex, elegant, smooth-textured, structured wine that will evolve for another 5-7 years. This is a lengthy, impressive effort."

"Opaque purple. Blueberry, blackberry, violet, cracked pepper and bitter chocolate on the vibrant nose. Bright and spicy on entry, then supple and suave in the middle palate, offering flavors of candied dark berries, violet and bitter chocolate. Finishes very long and smooth, with gentle tannins and intense florality."

"Prominent earthy and gamy notes add depth and complexity to the rich vein of blackberry, dried blueberry and seared steak flavors that glide easily over polished tannins into the long, vivid finish. Offers great presence and distinctive flavors. Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. 185 cases made."

"Offers up freshly cut flowers, mint, licorice, spices and violet. Graphite, violets, dark cherries and menthol are some of the many notes that flesh out in an effort that is relatively approachable. Hints of smoke, licorice and incense flow through to the detailed, nuanced finish. This is a great showing."

"This is one of the all-time great Vieux Telegraphes I have tasted in the last 3+ decades. I believe it is even superior to the 2007, which I had several weeks ago. This boasts a dense purple color along with a sumptuous bouquet of spring flowers, boysenberries, black cherries, black currants, nori, black olives, licorice and pepper. This full-bodied, meaty, thick, juicy effort possesses a boatload of tannin, but it also has incredible concentration. More massive than I remember from last year, it has put on considerable weight and intensity."

"Black cherries, mocha, violets, licorice and graphite all jump from the glass. This is quite typical of the vintage in its verve, cut, focus and minerality. This is a terrific showing."

"Mocha, tar, spices and tobacco all flow from the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five. A rich, intense wine, the 2010 impresses for its depth and sheer power. This is far from an easygoing Cabernet. I imagine the 2010 might still be going strong at age 20. The cold, late season yielded an utterly magnificent Cabernet that will challenge the top labels of many other properties."

"This is quite beautiful. Cedar, graphite, sweet herbs, licorice and leather add complexity to a core of highly expressive red fruits. Impressive for its energy, drive and focus. There is a silkiness and polish that is reminiscent of the 2004. 75% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc."

"78% To Kalon fruit. Saturated red-ruby. Currant, graphite, wild herbs, cedar and sexy oak on the nose, lifted by a floral topnote. A broad and very elegant midweight, with lively cassis and floral flavors burnished by mellow oak tones. Lovely fine-grained, long Cabernet with excellent lift."

"Made in a much more fruit-driven style than some of the other Pinots in this lineup. It boasts stunning depth and richness, but in the classic Calera style that never abandons a sense of structural finesse. Juicy dark berries, hard candy, flowers and herbs wrap around the rich, textured finish. This is yet another dazzling Pinot from Calera."
