This racy wine is jammed with pepper and licorice, plus notes of black raspberry, roasted sage and smoke. Still youthful and unpolished, but promises much.

2009 Dashe

A fine vintage from Mike and Anne Dashe, this 2009 is bright and refreshing Zin. There's lush red fruit between the layers of spice, the structure youthfully tight and firm. Everything about it feels balanced and complete. Enjoy this as a young wine, decanted for lamb.

2008 Ravenswood

As a group, the Ravenwood's 2008 single-vineyard Zinfandels rank among winemaker Joel Peterson's best efforts yet, and, if picking a favorite is not easy, the deep and delicious Teldeschi bottling stands out as our pick of the bunch. Keenly focused on optimally ripe berries and showing the stunning concentration of classic old-vine Zinfandel, it is wonderfully well-balanced for the big wine that it is, and its layered flavors last and last. It will no doubt tempt drinking early, but it has a decade or more of improvement ahead.

2009 Ridge

While the Russian River Valley is a cool-climate area, the vineyard sourcing for this wine is in a warmer, eastern part of the appellation. It’s ultrarich in berry, licorice and bacon flavors that are sweet in the middle palate, but finish with a dry scour of tannins. Lovely now and over the next six years.

2007 Grgich Hills

So enriched by sweet oak that its very deep, berry-like fruit takes a moment to catch up with its initial aromas of sweet cream, cappuccino, root beer and toast, this opulent Zin finds a niche all its own. It is wonderfully supple with a fine spine of tannin that firms without being overly obvious, and its layered flavors reflect all the complexity of its nose.

2008 Storybook Mountain

One of Wine & Spirits 100 Best Wines of 2011: There's something about the way zin ripens in the east-facing hills north of Calistoga that appeals to me in my gut as much as my brain. It has the freshness of blackberries picked on a hike in Point Reyes. That wild berry flavor tinges toward brighter fruit, layering vibrant strawberry, tart raspberry and cracked black pepper into a savory Napa Valley red. Yum may not be a technical term, but I wrote it! Balanced, sophisticated and elegant, this gains with air and would be delicious with simple roast leg of lamb.

2007 Elyse

Good deep red-ruby. Very ripe aromas of crushed berries and violet lifted by pepper. Suave on entry, then sweet and thick in the middle but energetic, with reticent flavors of crushed berries and wild herbs. This broad, deep but youthfully backward zinfandel finishes with a fine dusting of sweet tannins.

2009 Ridge

The 2009 Lytton Springs is the biggest and most structured of these 2009 Zinfandel-based reds, largely owing to the earthier soils and the presence 23% Petite Sirah. Black fruit, plums, tar, licorice and smoke are some of the notes that flow from this generous, inviting red. The Lytton Springs is fairly structured, and can definitely benefit from another year or two (perhaps more) in bottle. The blend is 74% Zinfandel, 21% Petite Sirah and 5% Carignane.

2010 Bedrock

2009 Carlisle

Another classic in the making, the 2009 Carlisle Zinfandel Papera Ranch demonstrates just how elegant Zinfandel can be with its kirsch and raspberry notes that resemble Grenache more than Zinfandel. There is terrific fruit on the attack and mid-palate, full body and good purity. Moreover, the wood component is pushed to the background. This 2009 should be delicious young and last 4-5 years.
