The real blockbuster is the 2008 Samsara Syrah Melville Vineyard, a California version of a French Cote Rotie. The small amount of Viognier included in the blend has resulted in an exotic floral character intermixed with notes of Allspice, black raspberries, black currants, and bacon fat. The incredibly complex aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, opulent, voluptuously textured wine with silky tannins as well as abundant character and personality.

Inky purple. Explosively perfumed aromas of red and black fruit preserves, olive tapenade, smoky herbs and incense. Sappy, palate-staining blackberry and boysenberry flavors are complicated by notes of star anise and candied violet, with a jolt of cracked pepper on the back end. The finish strongly echoes the spice and blue fruit notes, lingering with outstanding clarity and persistent spiciness. This wine was fermented with 100% whole clusters in one-third new barrels and includes a bit of viognier.

A glass-coating opaque purple, it offers a brooding nose of wood smoke, Asian spices, pepper, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. The 2007 Wind Gap Griffin's Lair Syrah has wild, pungent aromas of boysenberry, sassafras, potpourri and smoky Indian spices, with a strong mineral undertone. Sappy, sharply focused red and dark berry preserve flavors are weighty but show no excess fat, with silky tannins adding structure. The finish is refreshingly nervy and packs a serious punch, echoing the sweet dark berry and smoke notes strongly. This could only be syrah.

Generous and intensely spicy in tone with solid blackberry, gamy and black pepper credentials to its aromas, this full-bodied, tightly constructed wine comes with both depth and structure to spare. Its ripeness plays second fiddle to its fruit, and its flavors, despite their volume, have yet to begin their inevitable unwinding into greater layering and accessibility. At every turn, this exceptionally balanced effort sets strength upon strength and impresses.

The 2009 Gramercy Cellars Syrah Lagniappe surrenders an inviting nose of smoked bacon, game, lavender, pepper, clove, blue, and black fruits. Velvety in the mouth, this plush bordering on voluptuous offering displays impeccable balance and a lengthy, pure finish. This pleasure-bent wine should continue to deliver the goods through 2024 if not longer.

The 2009 Carlisle Syrah Pelkan Ranch is inky purple. Potent aromas of cassis, cherry liqueur, blueberry, exotic spices, violet and graphite. Incredibly deep, powerfully structured wine with sappy dark fruit flavors laced with espresso, violet, cola, star anise and cracked pepper. For all its power this wine comes across as almost racy, with wonderful lift and energy from bright, juicy acidity. The deep, sappy blackcurrant and blueberry flavors refuse to let up on the long, spicy finish. No stems were used here and the wine was raised in 50% new French barriques.

The 2009 Block B (Syrah) comes across as remarkably primary. There is considerable minerality keeping all of the elements focused in this delineated, classy wine. The fruit shows tons of depth all the way through to the dramatic, explosive finish. This is another dazzling wine from Epoch. The Block B is a single parcel of Syrah from the Paderewski vineyard that spent 22 months in French barrels, 43% new.

The 2009 Authenticity (64% Syrah, 36% Mourvedre) shows a slightly brighter profile than the Ingenuity owing in part to the greater use of whole clusters. This opens up beautifully in the glass, with layers of expressive dark fruit, nicely integrated oak and fabulous length. The finish turns powerful and somewhat brooding. It will be interesting to see the direction this wine ultimately takes. Authenticity spent 22 months in French barrels, 45% new. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019.

The 2009 Ingenuity flows from the glass with gorgeous texture in its dark plums, licorice, flowers and French oak. It is an impressive wine endowed with gorgeous purity in its fruit and a striking, opulent personality. In 2009 the blend is 65% Syrah, 12% Petite Sirah, 12% Mourvedre, 7% Grenache and 4% Zinfandel, but it is the Syrah character that speaks most loudly. I especially like the textural richness and volume here. The wine was fermented in concrete, stainless steel tanks and new French oak barrels, and spent 22 months in French oak, 42% new.

Even better is the 2009 Gramercy Cellars Syrah John Lewis which spent 24 months in barrel. It flaunts an extra dimension of complexity in its captivating perfume. Notes of bacon, sausage, garrigue, lavender, pepper, and assorted black and blue fruits are followed by a satin-textured, suave, rich Syrah which deftly combines elegance and power. This lengthy effort may well see its 20th birthday in peak form.

Coming from row selection within a single vineyard, the 2010 Velvet Glove was matured in American oak, 97% new. Very deep garnet-black, it offers very pure, pronounced notes of ripe cassis and blackberries with underlying nuances of cedar, anise, hung meat, black tea and violets. Full bodied, very ripe and with layers of generous fruit, the opulence is well supported with a medium to high level of fine-grained tannins and crisp acid. It finishes very long. It should be at its best 2014 to 2024+. Unfortunately because of an accident at the warehouse during which about 1/3 of the production was destroyed, there are only 1012 cases.
