2009 Sierra Cantabria

Deep ruby.  Aromas of ripe cherry, cassis, blackberry and dark chocolate, with a touch of cola.  Lush, layered and focused, with a creamy texture and hefty dark fruit flavors.  Shows the ripeness of the year but there's good energy here too.  Finishes with smooth tannins, a hint of licorice and very good length.  I'll bet that this will be even better in a couple years but it's approachable now.

(70% garnacha, 20% syrah and 10% cabernet sauvignon, aged in French and American oak):  Dark purple.  Sexy aromas of blackberry, mulberry and violet, plus a strong note of incense.  Deeply pitched dark fruit preserve flavors are given an exotic character by notes of candied flowers and star anise.  Supple and expansive on the finish, lingerings with impressive tenacity and length.  The fancy barrels used here come from Alto Moncayo.

The 2009 Atalaya La Atalaya is 85% Garnacha Tintorera and 15% Monastrell that spent 12 months in French oak. It, too, sports a glass coated with glycerin as well as a super-fragrant nose of exotic spices, lavender, incense, and black raspberry. Succulent, layered, and totally pleasure-bent, this plush offering has a smooth-as-silk finish totally unexpected from a wine of this humble price. It is an amazing value in unrestrained hedonism.

The 2008 Finca Sandoval is composed of 50% syrah, 38% garnacha tintorerra and 12% garnacha. A complex bouquet offers red berries, cherry, rose and baking spices. There's a lively character here that reminds me a bit of ripe pinot noir. Juicy and open-knit, with gently sweet raspberry and cherry flavors and good spine. Finishes with gentle tannins and very good clarity, repeating the spicy note.

The 2009 Bodegas Triton Avante is 100% Mencia sourced from multiple vineyards with an average age of 43 years. The wine was aged in both stainless steel (30%) and French oak (70%) for 5 months. The 2008 Bodegas Triton is 100% Tinta de Toro sourced from old vines some of which are located outside the boundaries of Toro requiring that the generic DO of Castilla y Leon be utilized. The wine was aged for 15 months in new French oak. Notes of Asian spices, tar, tapenade, violets, blackberry, and blueberry inform the nose of this richly fruity, layered, lengthy offering. There is enough underlying structure to allow for another 2-3 years of development and this superb value can be enjoyed through 2020 if not longer.

The wine was aged for 11 months in new and seasoned French and American oak. It offers up a brooding bouquet of underbrush, mineral, spice box, blueberry, and blackberry. Packed and impeccably balanced, this savory, layered effort is surprisingly forward for its size. It can be approached now but will be better with 2-3 years of additional cellaring.

2008 Alvaro Palacios

The 2008 Les Terrasses Vinyes Velles is the same blend as the Camins cuvee but is aged for 12 months in 20% new French oak. It offers greater complexity both aromatically and on the palate. Smoothly-textured, intense, plush, and spicy, it opens up nicely in the glass with floral (lavender), mineral, pepper, and black cherry notes reappearing in the robust finish.

Ripe, concentrated, and full-flavored, this is a relatively forward Priorat that will evolve for 2-3 years and drink well through 2020.

Broad, mouth-filling, layered, and structured, this still tightly wound Rioja has all the right stuff. All it needs is another 8-10 years to fully blossom after which it will provide pleasure through 2046.

2004 Finca Allende

The 2004 Finca Allende Calvario is sourced from a single vineyard planted in 1945 and is composed of 90% Tempranillo, 8% Grenache, and 2% Graciano. The wine was aged for 14 months in 100% new French oak and bottled unfiltered. Opaque purple-colored, it offers up an expressive nose of toast, vanilla, spice box, floral elements, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur which leaps from the glass. This is followed by a mouth-filling wine with oodles of flavor, great definition, and plenty of ripe tannin leading to a finish lasting nearly a minute. Still an infant developmentally, the wine begs for another 6-8 years in bottle. It should last for at least 25 years. Kudos to Finca Allende for a magnificent set of 2004 Riojas!

This stylish wine has a splendid perfume of sandalwood, incense, truffle, Asian spices, lavender, and black cherry leading to an already complex, spicy, savory wine with superb volume and mouth-coating flavors. Give it another 4 years of cellaring and drink it through 2034. Collectors will discuss the merits of 2004 for many years to come.
