2009 Veramonte

A big, ripe style, with a strong toasty vanilla frame to the full-bodied core of black cherry and dark plum fruit, followed by a twinge of licorice on the finish. There's more muscle than finesse in the end, but this is very solid.

2010 Siduri

The 2010 Siduri Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands shows lovely inner palate sweetness and freshness in its sweet cherries, flowers, spices, all of which come together beautifully in a fleshy, generous style. The Santa Lucia Highlands bottling is made from parcels in Rosella’s, Pisoni, Garys’ and Sierra Mar. It is a blend of lower-rated barrels within the Siduri cellar. As can sometimes happen, the blend is greater than the sum of its parts. This is a stunning California Pinot for the money.

2009 Luca

Laura Catena has again hit a home run with her 2009 Luca Pinot Noir (as she did in 2006, 2007, and 2008). There is very little Pinot Noir in Mendoza (Patagonia is the principal hope for Argentina Pinot Noir) so this streak is particularly impressive. The grapes are sourced from a relatively young vineyard at 4700 feet of elevation. The wine was aged for 12 months in 30% new oak and bottled without fining or filtration. Medium ruby in color, it offers up an alluring bouquet of cherry blossom, strawberry, raspberry, smoke, and incense. Velvety-textured with silky, layered fruit, complex flavors, and a lingering finish, this superb value (for Pinot Noir) will provide pleasure for another 6-8 years if not longer.
