2007 Benmarco

The 2007 Benmarco Expresivo is a blend of 50% Malbec, 15% Bonarda, 15% Syrah, and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon and Tannat. It was aged for 14 months in new French and American oak before bottling without fining and filtration. Opaque purple-colored, it offers up an alluring bouquet of sandalwood, spice box, incense, black cherry, and blackberry. Medium- to full-bodied, it is already revealing considerable complexity, layered black fruit, plenty of spice notes and enough structure to evolve for 2-3 years. Give this classy effort another 2-3 years of bottle age and drink it from 2011 to 2022.

2009 Gramercy Cellars

Tempranillo seems to be gaining a toehold in eastern Washington and there now is sufficient evidence that it can turn out well when farmed correctly and made by talented people. Gramercy’s offering, the 2009 Tempranillo Inigo Montoya is one of the better ones. Exotic spices, tobacco, truffle, violets, and blackberry aromas inform the nose of a savory, elegant, nicely proportioned, intensely flavored wine.

2007-altamura-sangiovese-napa-valley-california-red-wine-750ml-thumb.jpg

2007 Altamura

I’m no fan of California Sangiovese, but Altamura makes me a believer in what can be achieved. Aged 30 months in 70% new oak, from their own vineyard planted between 700 and 1000-feet above sea level, their 2008 Sangiovese has a dark plum/garnet color and a gorgeously sweet nose of new saddle leather, strawberry jam, cherries, menthol, and spice. The complex aromatics are followed by a surprisingly opulent, full-flavored, beautifully textured and concentrated wine that literally has to be tasted to be believed. If 95% of California Sangiovese producers had emulated this style, this grape would have been far more acceptable to consumers. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.

2009 Carlisle

The 2009 Mourvedre Bedrock Vineyard (100% Mourvedre with 15.4% alcohol) exhibits that varietal's floral, blueberry and porcini mushroom-like characteristics as well as full-bodied power, impressive ripeness and sweet tannin. Mourvedre is a difficult varietal, but this effort is ripe with silky tannins rather than vegetal with tea-tasting fruit and excessively astringent tannin. Given the anti-oxidative characteristics of Mourvedre, this 2009 should drink well for 10-15+ years.

2009 Crocker & Starr

The 2009 Crocker & Starr Cabernet Franc emerges from the glass with pure varietal warmth and expressive generosity. Mocha, espresso, exotic spices and dark red berries flow effortlessly to the long, rich finish. Today the tannins are a bit firm but with another year in bottle this will drink beautifully. In 2009 the percentage of Cabernet Franc is up to 97%. A small addition of 2% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot rounds out the blend. The 2009 was aged in 70% new oak barrels.

2008 Robert Keenan

The 2008 Robert Keenan Cabernet Franc now represents 524 cases. Cabernet Franc has performed brilliantly at this height, and this is another example of the potential of Spring Mountain. This dense purple-hued wine is richly fruity with a beautiful floral, blueberry, raspberry and black currant-scented nose, good underlying minerality and a gorgeous fruit intensity without any sense of heaviness. Elegant, pure and well-textured, this is a stunning Cabernet Franc to drink over the next decade.

This Grenache-driven blend weaves together a savory mix of ripe dark berry, black licorice, spice, mineral, sage and black tea. 2009 Epoch

The 2009 Ingenuity flows from the glass with gorgeous texture in its dark plums, licorice, flowers and French oak. It is an impressive wine endowed with gorgeous purity in its fruit and a striking, opulent personality. In 2009 the blend is 65% Syrah, 12% Petite Sirah, 12% Mourvedre, 7% Grenache and 4% Zinfandel, but it is the Syrah character that speaks most loudly. I especially like the textural richness and volume here. The wine was fermented in concrete, stainless steel tanks and new French oak barrels, and spent 22 months in French oak, 42% new.

2009 Epoch

The 2009 Authenticity (64% Syrah, 36% Mourvedre) shows a slightly brighter profile than the Ingenuity owing in part to the greater use of whole clusters. This opens up beautifully in the glass, with layers of expressive dark fruit, nicely integrated oak and fabulous length. The finish turns powerful and somewhat brooding. It will be interesting to see the direction this wine ultimately takes. Authenticity spent 22 months in French barrels, 45% new. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019.

2009 Turley

It was difficult to chose a favorite although the 2009 Turley Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Ridge, Hayne Vineyard and Library Vineyard are the three greatest in terms of concentration, depth and potential complexity. As I have said so many times, Petite Sirah is by far the most underrated varietal in California, so it is reassuring to see how many producers continue to make remarkable wines with around 13-14% alcohol as well as 20-40+ years of aging potential.

2008 Blankiet Estate

The 2008 Rive Droite Proprietary Red (68.5% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc, 7.5% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon; 320 cases produced) offers soaring, complex aromas of barbecue smoke, juicy black currants, chocolate-infused black cherries, mocha, camphor and incense are intense as well as persuasive. This opulent, full-bodied wine possesses good density and abundant complexity. It comes close in quality to the brilliant 2007. The precocious 2008 should continue to offer provocative drinking over the next 12-15 years.

2009 Ovid

The 2008 Ovid (68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot) is a delicious, full-throttle, multi-dimensional wine, with loads of red, blue and black fruits and hints of camphor and graphite as well as forest floor notes in a medium-bodied, restrained, but impressively authoritative style to drink over the next 15 or more years. This operation has elicited considerable acclaim, given the talent involved. First of all is the terroir, a stunning location high on Pritchard Hill, a neighborhood filled with Napa superstars, such as Colgin, Bryant Family, Continuum, David Arthur, and Del Dotto. Add to that the level of talent – winemaker Andy Erickson, consultant Michel Rolland, viticulturalist David Abreu – and the result is essentially a think-tank of world-class quality.
