2009 Falesco

This Merlot is one of the finest wines I have ever tasted from Falesco. It is a decidedly firm, vibrant Merlot that stands in stark contrast to the super-ripe, obvious Vitiano Rosso. Here the fruit is wonderfully precise and elegant. Jammy blueberries, blackberries, cinnamon, leather and crushed rocks are woven into a beautiful fabric. The French oak is layered very nicely, adding depth and flavor, but never overpowering the wine. This is impressive juice from proprietor Riccardo Cotarella. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2017.

2008 Summers Estate

The 2008 Merlot possesses copious quantities of white chocolate, coffee bean, black cherry and black currant characteristics. This full-bodied, lusty, heady, rich Merlot is an example of what Summers does well – over-deliver fruit, character and flavor intensity at an extremely fair price point.

2010 Mollydooker

Very deep garnet-purple colored, the 2010 The Scooter Merlot gives pronounced notes of warm plums, blackberry preserves, coconut and baking spices plus a whiff of toasty cedar. Ripe, concentrated and voluptuous in the mouth, it offers tons of vanilla and spice flavors, a medium level of velvety tannins, medium-high acid and a long finish. Drinking beautifully now, it should cellar to 2016+.

2008-l

2008 L'Ecole No. 41

Not your average mid-priced Merlot, this complex and well-crafted blend includes 12% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec. Young, sappy red fruits lead into a wine with depth and substance, annotated with highlights of citrus and steel. Nuances keep coming on... black cherry, licoriceq and iron filings. A delight.

2007 Robert Keenan

A delicious Merlot, drily tannic and rich in blackberries, cherries and chocolate. Nearly as good as the winery’s much more expensive Reserve. Great with grilled steak with sautéed mushrooms.

2009 Neyers

Dark red.  Sexy aromas of red cherry, mocha and caramel, lifted by a floral nuance.  Silky and lush in the mouth, with lovely aromatic perfume to the flavors of cherry, raspberry, flowers, cocoa and dusty spices.  A nicely balanced, lively merlot that finishes with a fine dusting of suave tannins and subtle persistence.

2008 Duckhorn

Shows the soft, mellow feeling a fine Merlot should possess, although it’s certainly tannic enough, in the Duckhorn style. However, the tannins are intricate and accessible, and frame lush cherry, red currant, licorice and cinnamon spice flavors. Hard to resist now, and should hold over the next four years.

2009 Blackbird Vineyards

A glorious wine. Based on Merlot, with nearly equal parts of the two Cabernets, it’s softly smooth and delicious right now. Totally bone dry, yet rich and sweet in cherries, berries, chocolate and cedar, it satisfies on every level. Expensive, yes, but a relative bargain for a great Napa wine.

An amazing wine made in a rich, generous style, with loads of ripe berry flavors, including wild berry, blueberry, raspberry and plum. Full-bodied, it's fleshy and easy-drinking already, yet has the depth and concentration for cellaring. Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

2008 Robert Keenan

The opaque ruby/purple-hued 2008 Robert Keenan Merlot Reserve Mailbox Vineyard is a stunning 350-case cuvee that competes with some of the finest Merlots made in Napa Valley. Almost crunchy, this juicy wine has vivid minerality, lots of sweet boysenberry and berry fruit intermixed with flowers, white chocolate and spice characteristics. Medium to full-bodied, substantial, elegant and pure, this beauty should be enjoyed over the next 10-15 years.

2008 Pahlmeyer

One of the few world-class Merlots in Napa Valley has always come from Pahlmeyer, and the 2008 looks to be no exception. Inky purple-colored, the wine offers up chocolatey espresso/mocha/cocoa notes as well as plenty of plum, black cherry and blacker fruits. Medium to full-bodied, with silky tannins, surprising elegance, and good richness, it is not the blockbuster it can be in some vintages, but it is very stylish and should drink well for 10-15 years.

The 2008 Mernet Reserve Proprietary Red (350 cases produced) is composed of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon. I’ve never liked the name that much, but I sure love the wine. Another prodigious effort from Keenan, it boasts an inky/purple color as well as a sweet nose filled with blackberry, black currant and cherry fruit intermixed with mocha and chocolate. Full-bodied and rich with an enticing suppleness as well as admirable length and texture, it should drink well for 15 or more years. For those who haven’t noticed, Michael Keenan appears to be ratcheting up the quality with every new vintage. Bravo!

This opulent, full-bodied wine possesses good density and abundant complexity. It comes close in quality to the brilliant 2007. The precocious 2008 should continue to offer provocative drinking over the next 12-15 years.
