The 2008 Chianti Classico Querciabella is a very pretty, attractive wine laced with fragrant red fruit. This is a finely knit, small scaled vintage of the Querciabella with beautiful balance and a long, harmonious finish. A beautifully delineated, crystalline finish rounds out this wine that shows the more delicate, Burgundian side of Sangiovese. I hope readers can appreciate just how hard it must have been to make a wine of this level from biodynamically farmed vineyards with minimum intervention in the very challenging 2008 harvest. The Querciabella is 95% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2008 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Ateo is composed of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Reveals gorgeous dark red fruit, herbs, cassis, cedar and sweet spices. This is a fairly compact Ateo – not surprising considering the vintage – yet it shows plenty of concentration, depth and sheer muscle. It is a terrific effort in this vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018.

The entry-level 2008 Le Cupole is beautiful and expressive in its dark red fruit. The 2008 is a mid-weight Cupole, with just a touch less exuberance than the superb 2007, but with just as much personality and sheer character. Silky tannins frame the mineral-laced fruit through to the finish, where the wine’s inner sweetness lingers on the close. The Cupole is one of the finest relative values in Tuscan wine, and is a one of my go to choices on restaurant wine lists. This is another fabulous effort from Andrea Franchetti. In 2008 Le Cupole is approximately 35% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2016.

The 2008 Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano shows lovely intensity in its dark fruit, grilled herbs, licorice and earthiness. This, too, is another feminine, graceful wine with gorgeous length and a polished, harmonious personality. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2015.

Licorice accents cherry and plum flavors in this rich, dense and powerful red, which persists with spice notes and a touch of menthol as this plays out on the firm finish.

The 2008 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano shows fabulous intensity in its dark fruit. It is a beautifully balanced Vino Nobile that offers superb depth wedded to a powerful sense of structure that should allow the wine to drink well for a number of years. The Vino Nobile is 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo aged in a combination of cask and barrel. This is a fabulous effort.

Subtle currant, cedar and floral aromas follow through to a dense, full-bodied palate of ripe fruits and silky tannins, with a long finish. A little age will soften this just slightly. Really serious. Best after 2010.

The 2007 Selvapiana Chianti Rufina Riserva Bucerchiale is good, full ruby-red. Intense aromas of red cherry, raspberry and marzipan display captivating purity. Enters sweet and superripe, offering creamy flavors of ripe red cherry and raspberry jam. Finishes with excellent length and a lingering raspberry liqueur note, but the tannins turn quite austere at the back. This wine merits 95 points on the strength of its nose alone, but on the palate it's a little drying. Perhaps I caught it at an awkward stage and another year or so in the cellar will bring more harmony.

The GD Vajra Albe is a beautiful, supple Barolo graced with exquisite fruit and a plump, juicy personality. It can be enjoyed with a minimum of bottle age or also cellared for at least a decade. This is a marvelous effort from Vajra and is the equivalent of the top wine at many other estates.

The 2008 Passopisciaro emerges with gorgeous textural richness in its elegant, silky tannins. The 2007 Chianti Classico Castello di Ama is fabulous. There is so much going on in the glass, as endless layers of perfumed dark red fruit caress the palate in stunning style. The wine’s precision, elegance and overall sense of harmony are all first class. Smoke, tar and roses add the final layers of complexity on the finish. Today the wine is mostly remarkable for its exceptional silkiness; readers will have to wait at least a few years for the aromatics and flavors to develop tertiary nuances. The Castello is a wine that sets a new standard for what is possible within the Chianti Classico appellation.

The 2006 Prunotto Barolo is an overachiever in this vintage. Dark cherries, plums, mint, spices, herbs and a host of other balsamic notes are woven together nicely in a wine of notable class. The 2006 Fattoria di Felsina Fontalloro has enticing, expressive aromatics lead to an expansive core of fruit. Round, finessed tannins give the wine an additional level of polish. There is superb purity to the fruit and wonderful overall balance. Tar, smoke, licorice, and grilled herbs come to life on the finish. Simply put, this is a great, majestic Fontalloro. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2018.

The 2008 Feattoria di Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is playing it close to the vest at this stage. The 2008 reveals its charms only reluctantly. Layers of fruit hide beneath a powerful wall of tannin. The wine remains intensely mineral and equally primary, with little in the way of aromatic development. It is a shame to taste this today, as the wine clearly needs a number of years before it begins showing its true pedigree. Readers in search of immediate gratification should probably pass. Those in search of fine, cellar worthy Chianti Classico will adore the 2008 Rancia. Clean, saline notes frame the exquisite finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2023.

The 2005 Boroli Barolo is gorgeous in its perfumed red berries, flowers and spices. This accessible, mid-weight Barolo offers tons of elegance in a delicate, accessible style. The tannins could use a touch more polish, but bottle age should help. The overall balance here is commendable at this stage. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020.

Guido Porro’s 2006 Barolo Vigna Lazzairasco possesses a touch more density and structure than the S. Caterina. Freshly cut flowers, tar and new leather develop in the glass, adding layers of complexity to the beautifully articulated fruit. The Lazzairasco is a serious Barolo that needs time but it is shaping up as one of the hidden gems of the vintage. It is a fabulous effort from Porro. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026.

The 2004 La Spinetta Sassontino is made in a similarly intense style, but it possesses a more layered expression of fruit. The wine took quite a bit of time to open in the glass, yet it offers outstanding potential. There isn’t a whole lot of Sangiovese typicity here, but this is very pretty wine nonetheless. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2019.

The 2007 La Spinetta Barbera d’Alba Gallina emerges from the glass with a gorgeous array of violets, tar, smoke, minerals, plums and spices. This is a beautifully delineated Barbera with gorgeous freshness and clarity that carries through to the refined finish. Some of the weight of past vintages seems missing as the 2007 is built more on finesse rather than sheer power alone. The wine continues to grow in the glass, revealing plenty of minerality and a long, pure finish. It is a terrific effort from La Spinetta. The Gallina spent 16-18 months in French oak prior to being bottled. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2017.

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino graces the palate with exquisite layers of crushed flowers, tobacco, grilled herbs, mint and wild cherries. There is a deep soulfulness to this wine that is hard to fully capture with words. Despite its richness and super-ripe, racy fruit, the Brunello preserves quite a bit of freshness and elegance. Sweet layers of inner perfume weave through the expansive, textured fruit.

Flavors of macerated cherry and medicinal herbs, with a hint of orange peel, mark this dense, sinewy red, which is light, elegant and lively, with a firm backbone of tannins. Be patient. Best from 2014 through 2027.

The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova saturates the palate with masses of super-ripe dark fruit, tar, licorice and new leather. The Tenuta Nuova is an especially full-bodied, seamless Sangiovese deeply influenced by the Mediterranean climate of this warm site in the south of Montalcino. Layers of fruit build to an effortless, resonant finish laced with considerable aromatic nuance. This is another terrific showing from Giacomo Neri and his talented team.

The 2008 Antinori Tignanello is unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage. The 2008 isn’t a huge or obvious Tignanello, rather it is a wine that impresses for its sublime elegance and precision. Understated layers of fruit caress the palate like cashmere in this impeccable, soft wine. There is not a hard edge to be found. Black cherries, tobacco, smoke and licorice are some of the notes that come through on the finish. The flavor profile is decidedly on the dark side, but the wine’s structure is medium in body and intensity. In 2008 the Tignanello has more energy, focus and length than the Solaia. It is a fabulous achievement!

The best Grandi Annate ever.

The 2005 Vietti Barolo Brunate is a brooding, mysterious wine that possesses a level of sheer concentration and richness that is exceedingly rare in this vintage. It is also an incredibly primary, full-bodied Barolo that will require significant patience, but all of the signature Brunate notes are in the glass, and this Barolo should develop into a splendid wine over the coming years. This is another awesome effort from Vietti. I may be underestimating this wine, as it is ridiculously great even at this early stage.

All of the elements that make the 2001 so attractive reappear in the 2004 Vietti Barolo Riserva Villero, only with even more expressiveness and character. The 2004 is a showstopper loaded with class and pedigree. Seemingly endless waves of explosive fruit stain the palate in this radiant, harmonious Barolo. Everything is simply in the right place, and there is just so much going on in the glass, in all direction. This is another dazzling effort from Vietti.
