2010 Domaine Andezon

The 2010 Domaine Andezon Cotes du Rhone is a blend of 90% Syrah and 10% Grenache. This wine comes from 40+-year-old Syrah vines and 60+-year-old Grenache vines. Dense ruby/purple, with a stunning nose of blackberry liqueur and jus de viande (beef/meat juices), its thrilling, intensely pure, full-bodied mouthfeel, good freshness, and striking floral character all combine for one of the very best bargains in dry red wine that readers are likely to find anywhere in the world. This is super and should continue to drink well for another 3-4 years.

2010 Michel Gassier

Wow, is this an exciting wine! A custom cuvee put together by importer Eric Solomon along with the brilliant oenologist Philippe Cambie and Costieres de Nimes’ up-and-coming superstar, Michel Gassier, this blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah (and there are 5,000 cases for the US) comes from the 70- to 80-year-old Grenache vines on the plateau of Domazan to the south of Chateauneuf du Pape. This sensational wine tastes more like Chateauneuf du Pape than just about any Cotes du Rhone one is likely to find. It is also another example of what looks to be another great vintage emerging from the southern Rhone – 2010. This is one of the greatest Cotes du Rhones I have ever tasted – wonderfully intense, deep ruby with some purple tinges, with a stunning nose of black raspberry liqueur intermixed with sweet cherries, licorice, pepper and Provencal lavender. Round, generous, opulent and heady, this fabulously intense, hedonistic wine should be drunk over the next 3-4 years. Bravo!

2009 Domaine Roche

A blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah, this is another astounding wine from the southern Rhone’s 2009 vintage. Aged in concrete as well as neutral wood, its dark ruby/plum color is followed by a big, sweet kiss of truffles, black cherries, tobacco leaf, and spice box. This medium to full-bodied, juicy, succulent Cotes du Rhone-Villages Cairanne is impossible to resist, so enjoy it over the next 2-3 years.

This blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Grenache, aged in barrels for 12 months (40% new and 60% two years old) and bottled unfined and unfiltered, has a dense purple color and deep licorice, graphite, black currant and black cherry notes with hints of earth and spice as well as some pepper and meat juice in a dense, medium to full-bodied effort.

2009 Chateau des Roques

Perhaps the finest Vacqueyras I have ever tasted from Chateau des Roques, the 2009 reveals copious black currant and sweet cherry notes intermixed with notions of smoked herbs and earth. Composed of 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 15% Mourvedre aged in foudre and tank, its creamy texture and irresistible personality suggest it should be consumed over the next 5-6 years.

2009 Chateau de Saint Cosme

A Cote Rotie lookalike at a low-end price point is the 2009 Deux Albion, a blend of mostly Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, but co-fermented with some of the white grape Clairette, and aged in tank. While it requires consumption in its first 2-3 years of life, this wine’s wonderfully exotic nose of spring flowers, white peaches, black raspberries and roasted herbs is followed by a full-bodied, opulent, hedonistic and intellectually pleasing wine that offers remarkable value for its price point.

2009 Domaine Font-Sarade

The 2009 Domaine Font Sarade Vacqueyras Les Hauts de la Ponce reveals a similar opaque ruby/purple color along with lush, succulent black fruit, cured meat, and smoked herb characteristics in its complex aromatics. Full-bodied with low acidity and sweet tannin, it should drink well for 6-7 years. It is a blend of 50% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 25% Mourvedre aged in cement.

2009 Domaine Diochon

The 2009 Domaine Diochon Moulin a Vent has pungent dark berries and cherry on the nose, with complicating notes of musky herbs and licorice.  Chewy, densely packed dark fruit flavors are initially taut and ungiving but aeration brings out flesh and sweetness.  The finish repeats the cherry note and leaves notes of bitter chocolate and herbs behind.  Give this air, or better yet age it for another three or four years, at a minimum.

A big, chewy, muscular effort, the 2009 Chateau Saint Cosme Crozes-Hermitage exhibits copious aromas of barbecue smoke, incense, melted licorice, black currant liqueur, white chocolate and espresso roast. This chewy, thick, juicy Crozes is ideal for drinking over the next decade or more.

2009 Domaine du Grapillon d'Or

Dark and tightly wound, with a mix of mulled plum, linzer torte, cassis and blackberry preserves flavors at the core, but held in check for now by roasted alder wood and dark bittersweet cocoa notes. A smoldering tobacco edge marks the finish. Best from 2012 through 2019.

2009 Domaine de la Solitude

The sexiest wine of this quartet is the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape, which comes from 30-50 year old vines and is aged primarily in tank with a tiny amount of the Syrah component kept in small barrels. The general blend is 55% Grenache, 20% Syrah and the rest Cinsault and Mourvedre. Its dark ruby/purple-tinged color is followed by big, sweet, juicy blueberry, blackberry, kirsch, licorice and smoked Provencal herb scents. Sumptuous, round, generous and already delicious, it is ideal for drinking over the next 10-12 years.

2009 Clos Saint Jean

The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes reveals supple tannins, a velvety texture, good opulence and low acidity. The wine is full-bodied, less intense in the mid-palate than the 2010, and already complex and evolved. It can be drunk now or cellared for 12-15+ years.

2006 La Piera en Damaisela

The 2006 Coteaux du Languedoc Terrasses du Larzac Las Flors de la Peira is Grenache and Syrah. Displays a simultaneously ravishing and decadent nose of fading lilies, iris, candied black fruits, mint chocolate, resin, and baking spices. Chalky, stony foundations under-gird the chocolate-drenched and spice-dusted black fruits on the palate, and an inner mouth floral profusion persists right though to a superbly soothing finish. In both perfume and its cocoa-powder richness and velvet texture, this puts me in mind of a great Pomerol. For as far-gone on sheer ripeness and decadence as it is, this retains a wonderful sense of lift and elegance. Certainly this wine bids fair to evolve fascinatingly for at least a decade.

2008 Chateau de Saint Cosme

In contrast, I thought the 2008 Chateauneuf du Pape was one of the more noteworthy successes of the vintage. Made from the same blend and from the same Chateauneuf du Pape sectors, it exhibits a dark ruby color along with sweet aromas of berries, roasted herbs, loamy soil and underbrush. Medium to full-bodied as well as surprisingly rich and concentrated for a 2008, it should drink nicely for 7-8 years.

2009 Paul Autard

Autard’s quasi-modern-styled offering is the dense plum/purple-colored 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee La Cote Ronde, a blend of equal parts Grenache and Syrah from relatively old vines (60 plus years) that sees some new oak barrels. However, the 2009 shows only subtle evidence of vanillin and toast. It is a seductive, full-bodied, opulent effort displaying notes of caramelized red and black fruits, herbs, licorice and a hint of ink. This full-bodied, rich 2009 is ideal for drinking over the next 12+ years.

2008 Jean Louis Chave

Bright purple. Extremely fresh, expansive aromas of black raspberry, candied violet, Asian spices and minerals. Pure and mineral-driven, with sweet dark fruit flavors and a lashing of minerality that adds lift and clarity. Floral and spice notes resonate on a very long, juicy, incisive finish, which also features a touch of candied licorice.

2007 Chateau de Saint Cosme

The 2007 Chateau de Saint Cosme Chateauneuf du Pape, which Barruol purchases from select vignerons, is dominated by Grenache, but it includes at least 30% Mourvedre and a small quantity of Cinsault. A dense purple color is accompanied by a ripe nose of red and black fruits, Christmas fruitcake, spice box, garrigue, and pepper. Rich and full-bodied with moderate tannin, good acidity, and a layered, intense mouthfeel, it will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring, and should age for 15+ years.

One of the more endowed 2009s, this 2009 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape is packed with dark smoldering cocoa, mesquite, tobacco and roasted fig notes, all inlaid with pure cassis and plum preserves fruit flavors. Long and authoritative on the finish, with singed vanilla bean and tar adding length and dimension. Best from 2015 through 2026.

2007 Jean Louis Chave

The spectacular 2007 Chave Hermitage boasts a dense purple color along with notes of creme de cassis, loamy soil, crushed rocks and acacia flowers, a rare opulence and a full-bodied style. Reminiscent of the 1991 Hermitage (a great vintage for Chave as well as most top producers in Hermitage), it should drink well for 20-25 years.
