2010 Elio Altare
"This is a gorgeous wine with the trademark Altare richness, plenty of varietal character and fabulous depth. Blueberries, currants, spices and licorice stain the palate on the intense finish. Year in and year out, Altare’s Dolcetto is one of the best in the region, as it is again in 2010. The Dolcetto is often one of my favorite Altare wines. It also ages far better than most people might expect."

Proprietor Adam's CommentsWhile the wines of Altare remain faithful to the elegant and plush style of wine produced in the sand, marl and tufa soils found in the commune of La Morra, they contain a freshness and concentration that is a notch above the rest. They were as a whole more juicy and approachable than many of their brethren at that stage. The Barolos are amazing and lovely, with an excellent balance of tannins and acid, their fragrance a haunting reminder of what it means to be Barolo- Soil, perfume and elegance. The charming Dolcetto was big enough to pass for California Pinot Noir, at once a fresh, fruity and friendly version of the grape. The composition of the soil is calcareous but also very sandy
with a mostly north and north-east exposure.
Vinification: Maceration on the skins for approx. 2/3 days in rotary fermentors with temperature control with ageing in stainless steal tank for about 10 months
The winery profile of the wine is dry but soft, delicate tannins, full taste of cherries and black cherry. Medium-bodied, easy drinking to be appreciated in the summer months, served a little chilled, In Italy it is considered an excellent everyday wine
